Van Loan School's Associate Director for Master's Nursing Program to Present at the 43rd Annual Conference for the Transcultural Nursing Society
Dr. Barbara Moloney, Associate Director for Master’s Nursing Program at the , is scheduled to present on global health topics at the Conference for the Transcultural Nursing Society, October 19 - 21, 2017.
This year’s conference theme is “Approaches to PopulationHealth that Reduce Health Disparities.” Presenters and attendees will explore conference objectives like transcultural nursing strategies that promote population health; the relationship between transcultural nursing and social determinants ofhealth; nursing theories that address health care to diverse populations; and best practices in transcultural nursing to the assessment of community need.
Moloney, along with HERO Project coordinator for Regis College Dr. Kettie Louis, will lead a podium presentation on Addressing Health Disparities in Haiti Through Nursing Education. Moloney’s experience with global health issues in Haiti is extensive and she was recently recognized for her work there.
Earlier this year on International Nurses Day, Moloney was honored by Nurses with Global Impact for her nursing education, program development, and healthcare work completed in Milot, Haiti. She was one of just 14 nurses recognized in a ceremony at the United Nations. Her work in Haiti started in January 2008 as part of a team of educators dedicated to professional development for nurses there. Since then she has been involved in several programs including biannual visits, a Basic Life Support (BLS) program for health care providers, a BLS instructor course, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) courses, and a critical care course.
“As one of the responders to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, I was acutely aware of educational needs for nurses on the ground and developed courses accordingly,” Moloney said. “I love nursing and teaching. My experiences in Haiti were both rewarding and memorable as I worked collaboratively with nurses there, so I am pleased to present on this topic at this year’s conference.”
Moloney also presented and evaluated a seminar on Cardiovascular Nursing for nurses in Milot as part of her doctoral research. In March 2017, she returned to Haiti to teach a course on Cardiovascular Nursing at St. Therese Hospital in Hinche.
Moloney joined Endicott’s School of Nursing this past summer to manage the Van Loan School’s M.S. in Nursing program, which offers concentration options for Administrator, Educator, Family Practitioner, and Global Health. Prior to her post at the Van Loan School she worked as the Associate Director, Day Division and Course Coordinator for Lawrence Memorial/Regis College Nursing Program and also served as a Staff Nurse and Clinical Educator for Lahey Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.
